VPS.NET Review
I'm a veteran of VPS services. I've run my own hosting company, done lots of web consulting, and currently am the CIO at a small retail chain. Put simply, I've used my fair share of web hosts over the years. Also, while my account with WHT may be new, I've been lurking around here for many years. And personally, I often trust the advice of a lot of users on here, so allow me to spit out my opinion on my current VPS provider.
VPS.net's biggest strength is scalability. Only pay for what you need is the name of the game. And with the ability to schedule additional nodes in advance, you can massively burst your vps resources if you expect additional load. If only some major websites were so well prepared...
I must say though, the most pleasant surprise has actually been their support staff. From corp executives commenting and being involved in the forums, to an extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and prompt helpdesk, I've never felt forgotten by vps.net.
To be fair, their services are not for novices, you're being handed a powerful toolset, but basic linux server knowledge is a must. You won't get anyone to hold your hand if you don't understand how to configure a basic LAMP stack, but if you do run into any technical snaffus, their support staff are once again, very helpful.
Their web based VPS management is one of the best I've seen. Web based console works perfectly, and online settings for IP address management and DNS setup are easy as well. Pre-made images also make deploying different distros a breeze, and their provisioning system is incredibly fast.
And finally, they use XEN for virtualization, not OpenVZ. OpenVZ is far more popular in the VPS market do to it's ease of use from the provider end, and the ability to oversell resources, but don't be fooled, XEN might have slightly more overhead, but at the end of the day you end up with a more reliable and customizable platform. However, your opinion may vary here on the OpenVz/Xen debate.
I highly recommend them for anyone from a web developer looking for a few sandboxes, to businesses looking for a powerful web hosting solution.
